Lithuanian Women brought to UK by crooks?

If you live in most of the countries of the FSU and watch tv, see billboards or even, occasionally, read a newspaper then it is beyond credible that any person would be ignorant of the risks of selling herself into working overseas. She would be aware of the possible outcomes of doing so.

The UN has sponsored publicity that even I have seen. The downside is that as I already noted such publicity also serves as recruiting poster as it tells the unaware of what the opportunites are even as it warns of the risks. This very knowledge removes, to a large degree, the ability of anyone to claim coercion, because in making a choice to go and sell themselves in foreign countries they do so from a position of informed consent.

Of course many people, including the do gooders and concerned wool do not know this, or choose to ignore it. I am certainly on the side of those who think that increased publicity and awareness is a good thing. But from the perspective of some posting in this thread it renders their position in respect of corercion untenable. Once one knows that there is a high awareness of the issues then the only fallback is that of kidnap and abduction. I have not said it does not happen, but it is simply bad business when there are thousands upon thousands of women, and men, lining up to be trafficked.
It should also be noted that even those who campaign against trafficking make no secret of the fact that almost all trafficking is voluntary.

When having a discussion about emotive issues it is important to remove the emotion from the discourse. Emotion is not about understanding, facts, or knowledge.

John, for the record, whilst I understand your need to rant and to rail against me, you will note that I have not ever disagreed that the things that you and others mention have not and do not happen. The difference is that you have an emotionally keyed absolutist point of view and I have a less emotionally tied and nuanced one based upon experience and what one might call 'field reports', in addition to the same public material designed to align opinion in a particular direction.

The bottom line as noted above is that whatever the level of the problem (and human trafficking is a problem) that the issue is only dealt with by removing the perception and reality of a favourable risk/reward ratio. That means removing the economic incentives by providing alternatives that do not entail temporary migration for economic reasons.
Those who know some stuff know that when economic conditions improve that all forms of trafficking, including by way of marriage, reduce.
